Sen. Cindy Holscher Urges Leavenworth City Council to Reject ICE Detention Center

TOPEKA, KS – Today Senator Cindy Holscher released the following statement ahead of the Leavenworth City Commission’s vote on whether to approve reopening the CoreCivic detention facility

“Reopening the CoreCivic facility in Leavenworth as an ICE detention center would move our state in the wrong direction. Like other CoreCivic facilities across the country, it has a deeply troubling history of deaths and injuries that staff say were preventable, and reopening it will not make our communities safer,” said Senator Cindy Holscher. “DHS continues to waste taxpayer dollars while abusing people across America — including here in Kansas. Leavenworth residents have made it clear that they do not want their community defined by one of these massive private detention facilities, and I urge the Leavenworth City Commission to listen to the people of their city and vote no.”

Cindy Holscher was raised on a farm and brought up with common sense, Midwest values, and a love of her country. Cindy and her husband Greg have lived in Kansas for over 25 years, and their three kids graduated from public schools. She first ran for office to help end the disastrous Brownback experiment and to restore funding to the schools. As a legislator, Cindy co-founded the Women’s Bipartisan Caucus, and she focused on lowering costs for working class and middle class Kansans. Now, she’s running for Governor because Kansas deserves a leader who has a proven track record of fighting for all Kansans.
