Sen. Cindy Holscher Urges Colleagues to Listen to Educators After School Cell Phone Ban Signed into Law

TOPEKA, KS – Today Senator Cindy Holscher released the following statement following Governor Kelly’s signing a school cell phone ban into law:

“I share concerns about cell phones and social media in schools, but this law takes a heavy handed approach,” said Senator Cindy Holscher. “Over 90% of Kansas students are already in districts with policies in place, yet this new law overrides local control, imposes an unfunded mandate, and puts a burden on teachers without providing the necessary resources. Unfortunately, school leaders were ignored during the legislative process. Now that this measure will be law, I urge the state to work closely with educators on implementation and to listen to their concerns. And I urge the legislature to make any necessary changes to the law as implementation challenges arise.”

Cindy Holscher was raised on a farm and brought up with common sense, Midwest values, and a love of her country. Cindy and her husband Greg have lived in Kansas for over 25 years, and their three kids graduated from public schools. She first ran for office to help end the disastrous Brownback experiment and to restore funding to the schools. As a legislator, Cindy co-founded the Women’s Bipartisan Caucus, and she focused on lowering costs for working class and middle class Kansans. Now, she’s running for Governor because Kansas deserves a leader who has a proven track record of fighting for all Kansans.
