Sen. Cindy Holscher Denounces Leavenworth Decision on Core Civic Facility and Demands Greater Accountability
TOPEKA, KS – Today Senator Cindy Holscher released the following statement on the Leavenworth City Commission’s vote to approve reopening the CoreCivic detention facility:
“I disagree strongly with the Leavenworth City Commission’s decision to allow the CoreCivic ICE facility to move forward,” said Senator Cindy Holscher. “The last time Kansas trusted CoreCivic to run this facility, conditions were so bad that a federal judge called it ‘an absolute hell hole’ – including a history of beatings, stabbings, and deaths. Neither CoreCivic nor DHS has demonstrated that this time will be any different. Particularly at a moment when ICE personnel are operating with impunity, detaining U.S. citizens and breaking the law, we must demand much greater accountability before doling out permits to operate in our communities. As governor, I will demand much greater scrutiny of CoreCivic moving forward.”

Cindy Holscher was raised on a farm and brought up with common sense, Midwest values, and a love of her country. Cindy and her husband Greg have lived in Kansas for over 25 years, and their three kids graduated from public schools. She first ran for office to help end the disastrous Brownback experiment and to restore funding to the schools. As a legislator, Cindy co-founded the Women’s Bipartisan Caucus, and she focused on lowering costs for working class and middle class Kansans. Now, she’s running for Governor because Kansas deserves a leader who has a proven track record of fighting for all Kansans.
