On Tuesday, Kansas state senator and gubernatorial candidate Cindy Holscher hosted a press call with Rabbi Mark Levin and Pastor Robert Johnson to denounce the vile text messages shared by Kansas Young Republican leadership – and to explain that the texts are only a symptom of the dangerous extremism the Kansas GOP has let go unchecked for too long.
“That extremism is encouraged from the top down, when politicians use division as a strategy and treat hate as a political weapon. As they say, the rot starts at the top,” said state senator Cindy Holscher. “This is not just about firing a few bad actors. The Republican Party has deep, structural work to do to root out the hate and extremism that have only grown bolder and more violent in recent years. For the sake of our state — and our democracy — I hope they do.
“This is a moment that calls for clarity and calls for moral courage,” said Rabbi Mark Levin “the intense and intentional cruelty in the Republican Party, here we have it in the Young Republicans, and in various places around our country, it must stop. Whether it’s applied to the left or to the right, it must stop.”
“As an African American person of faith, and as an African-American pastor, this is deeply troubling.” said Pastor Robert Johnson. “When you combine the redistricting, the remapping of districts, and the exclusion of African American history with these kinds of racist statements, that’s deeply concerning…We cannot remain silent when these kinds of things happen.”
